The Glowing Snowman is the adorable brain-child of Helen Goodbarton and is beautifully illustrated by Sophie Johnson Hill. It’s a ridiculously gorgeous and heartwarming tale of a little snowman who is trying to find his place in the world. We read this story on a chilly Autumn evening and I’m impossibly excited to share it with my son again on Christmas eve.
When I got a message from my old friend recently telling me she’d written a book I almost burst with excitement. A little bit of history to go with this…I worked for Helen many moons ago teaching dance and drama to under 11’s. I loved working with her and we had tons of fun over the years being silly, creative and building imaginations through play. So when my very creative friend tells me she’s written a book…not just a book…but a book about a snowman…that glows. Well. I pretty much couldn’t contain myself. I jumped at the chance to get a first glimpse. Lucky me!
This book really captures everything that makes a great children’s story. A little bit of magic, a thought or problem that needs resolving and a character that you invest in right from the off. The snowman had us smiling from the moment we began to read. Dexter loved Sophie Johnson-Hill’s child-like and playful illustrations which bring the words to life perfectly.
Now, I’m not going to give the story away – you must, must, must read this book for yourselves. But I can tell you that this is a variation on a lost and found story that really makes you think. We talked about how the little snowman might be feeling at different parts in the story and how the resolution to the tale makes everything feel okay again.
This book provides a great non-threatening way to discuss how everyone is special – not because of what they have or what they can do; just because of who they are. In a world where we all feel like we have to offer something ‘special’ that is a lovely reminder of that. You are enough because you are you. What a wonderful and refreshing message for our children to hear. Bravo Helen Goodbarton!
If you fancy reading something a little bit different, with beautiful words, clever and witty rhymes then this is the perfect read for you. Find out about Sojo Publishing Mouse and their projects here via their FB page
I know this won’t be the only successful book that comes from this partnership – the combination of wonderful words and fabulous pictures is too amazing to be ignored! I think the fact they’ve already smashed their kickstarter says it all.
Congratulations on a wonderful book. A must-have for any little person’s bookshelf.
